The Challenge
In regulated manufacturing (automotive, aerospace, medical devices), every quality measurement and modification must be traceable: who did it, when, and why. Failing an audit can mean losing a contract or certification.
Kapture IO processed thousands of quality samples daily. Samples could be edited after creation, but there was no reliable way to prove what had changed or whether anyone had tampered with records. Database audit logs had a credibility problem: they lived inside the same system they monitored.
As Product Manager I identified blockchain as the right approach, not because of the 2017 hype, but because the problem required three specific properties that a distributed ledger provides:
- Immutability: changes couldn’t be altered or deleted by anyone
- Independent verifiability: anyone could confirm a record hadn’t been modified without relying on our systems
- Transparency: full change history visible and attributed
The key product decision: blockchain had to be invisible during daily use and only surface during audits.
The Solution
- Backend service capturing every sample change, computing cryptographic hashes and registering them on the blockchain asynchronously
- Change history view showing a timeline of modifications with verification marks (green = hash matches on-chain record)
The Results
- Every change to every quality sample independently verifiable in seconds
- Zero workflow disruption for quality teams
- Cryptographic proof of data integrity for client audits, not just a promise
- Dramatically reduced audit preparation time
